  • The games began in 1930 in Montevideo in Uruguay and were the creation of Jules Rimet. He wanted to recreate the idea of the Olympics and the worldwide community feel that goes along with it but with football at the heart of the competition. He saw a way of bringing the countries of the world together through their combined love of the sport. This first competition saw just 13 teams take part with only four of these coming from the Europe region. Not surprisingly Uruguay who was the host nation won the competition in a final against Argentina.
  • Like most other sporting events the competition did not take place during and just after the Second World War.
