The Silver Pass

The Silver Pass is under the Georgia Ave underpass. The current underpass was constructed in 1928 and over 60,000 cars now pass through it each day.
The transportation theme of the art was chosen to mark the role it played in the development of the community.

I enjoy all four, but especially like the trolley.

The current underpass was constructed in 1948, not 1928 as stated with the photo. It replaced the original underpass which was constructed in 1926. The original underpass (called the “subway”) had 3 lanes, two of which were separated by pillars from the other, which was originally designed to carry the trolley tracks. However, the trolley service was never resumed after the underpass was completed, and the lane was used for north-bound cars and trucks instead. Besides being narrow, the original underpass flooded in heavy rains. When the replacement was built an extra $100,000 (equivalent to about 3/4 million now) was spent on providing adequate drainage. When the new underpass opened, it was a really big deal. A crowd of 70,000 watched the Governor cut the ribbon, followed by a mile-long parade under the underpass and along Georgia Avenue. More details of this and other highway construction around downtown Silver Spring are in Home Sites of Distinction: The History of Woodside Park, available at the Silver Spring and other Montgomery County libraries.

And to see photos of the current underpass’ dedication on September 11, 1948, turn to p. 67 of “Historic Silver Spring,” available at any Montgomery County Library, the Silver Spring Borders, the Silver Spring Strosniders, or the Silver Spring Historical Society!

Beautiful. I bet it took a long time to finish the mosaic.
